APPLICATION
The use of head protective devices may cover the need to protect employees from exposure to falling objects, bumps, sun and fire & emergency situations.

RISK ASSESSMENT
The need to wear head protection should be established by conducting a risk assessment. Elimination or control of a hazard should be given first consideration.

Key factors:

  • The nature and location of the work
  • Potential of falling objects and/or contact with electrical hazards
  • Contact with fixed or protruding objects.
  • Exposure to heat, sun, wind, rain and chemicals
  • Specialist fire & emergency rescue situations.

Risk assessment should include the comfort level of selected PPE and the impact of any required accessories.

The comfort of workers exposed to high temperatures/heat whilst wearing safety helmets is a consideration. Safety helmet ventilation can assist in the relief of worker fatigue & discomfort. White safety helmets will provide better heat reflection.

Certain work tasks or conditions may also require head protection to be customised with specific accessories. When considering the need for accessories, ensure compatibility with the make of helmet being used.

Accessory options:

  • Cap attachable earmuffs
  • Face shield or welding shield
  • Visor / muff combinations for brushcutting /chainsaw applications
  • Wide brim for additional shade in hot climates
  • Neck flaps for protection against weather, molten metal splash, hot substances, etc.
  • Cooling pads for high heat exposures.

HELMET SERVICE LIFE & INSPECTION
Safety helmets should be inspected every 3 years from date of issue. Internal headgear should be replaced every 2 years. Safety helmets and components should be visually inspected for dents, cracks, scratches or other damage that may reduce the degree of safety originally provided.  Helmets showing damage or deterioration to the shell should be immediately disposed of.

Safety Tips

  • Mark the issue date on the label provided in the helmet.
  • Do not place stickers, paint or mark the helmet with any kind of ink marker.
  • Bump caps have no standards compliance and must not be used to replace safety helmets.
  • A safety helmet placed on the parcel shelf of a car becomes a missile in a collision
  • Every construction worker should wear a safety helmet where there is even the slightest risk of head injury.
