Steps in Respiratory Protection

1. Identify & Assess the Hazard. Identifying and assessing hazards in the workplace is the first step in
establishing respiratory protection.

2. Understand the Effects on the Body. Workers may be exposed to a variety of airborne substances which may be capable of causing harm e.g. gases, vapour, dust, mists, fume and smoke.

3. Product Selection. a. Select Respirator  b. Select Cartridge/Filter or Combination

4. Fit Testing, Care & Maintenance. The biggest contributor to reduced respiratory protection is poor fit. Fit testing is considered industry best practice, as well as a requirement to comply with AS/NZS 1715:2009. Regular care and maintenance of reusable respirators will help to achieve optimum performance and protection for the wearer.
