The metal manufacturing and fabrication industries experience more eye injuries than all other industries combined. Interesting to note is that tradespeople with work related eye injuries are wearing eye protection in 80% of cases. Their most common mistake is to rely upon safety spectacles alone when goggles and/or faceshields would have been a safer alternative.
Most injuries are caused by high speed particles from grinding, chipping, machining, drilling or cutting processes. Gas and electric welding also contributes significantly to eye injury statistics.
When cutting or grinding especially, remember that the high speed impact protection provided by a faceshield will prevent painful disfiguring injuries to the face. The loss of one tooth in a high speed impact can cost in excess of $1000 for dental repairs.
